The Home Energy section
of the Institute focussed on energy type information, conservation strategies
and methods to assess how much energy is used in the home. The Teachers conducted
an electrical Home Energy audit, as part of their "homework" assignment, using
watt meters supplied in the class to quatify the power needed for various
appliances. They learned about ways to reduce waste such as using more efficient
light bulbs and the impact of phantom loads on electrical consumption.
The teachers then analyzed a variety of provided data on global, US, and local area energy use, comparing electrical consumption to space heating and water heat energy requirements. An emphasis was placed on graphing, plotting, and analyzing the data.
The Home Energy Audit and other energy activities are provided below.
