Alternative Energy is probably one of the most talked about energy issues in the news, next to oil. The Energy Institute reviewed a variety of alternative energies and their future applications and focused on the topic of wind energy. An overview of wind energy concepts and current research efforts at Clarkson were presented.
The teachers then
put their knowledge to work by constructing and testing very small scale wind
turbines. They were able to vary the number and shape of the blades and then
quantify the effectiveness of their choices by measuring the power output
of the turbines. They then discussed which factors were most important. The
teacher's trial and error approach allowed them to experience many of the
same difficulties their students would experience if this activity was used
in the classroom. Specific information on Bio-Fuels can be found in the Transportation
Section of this CD.
